Dear Parents and Guardians,
The transition to middle school is a significant event in the life of a young person, and yet very few substantial strategies for support are provided for incoming 6th graders. Because the move to middle school can be challenging and frightening, 6th graders often experience lowered academic achievement and difficult social adjustments.
Fort Lupton Middle School does not want to just stand by and allow this rite of passage to happen to our 6th graders. Therefore, we have created a program where 6th graders get the necessary support to successfully navigate this transition and start their middle school experience on a positive note.
S.T.A.R.S., which is the acronym we follow here at school to build postiive behavior and leadership, is a middle school orientation and transition program that welcomes 6th graders and makes them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their middle school experience. Built on the belief that students can help students succeed, the program trains mentors from Fort Lupton Middle School’s 8th grade class to be S.T.A.R.S. Leaders. As positive role models, S.T.A.R.S leaders are mentors and student leaders who guide the 6th graders to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to middle school and help facilitate 6th grade success.
More and more studies show that if students have a positive experience their first year in middle school, their chances for success increase dramatically. S.T.A.R.S provides the structure for 6th graders to receive support and guidance from 8th graders who have been through the challenges that middle school poses and understand that the transition to a larger school can be sometimes overwhelming.
S.T.A.R.S also acts as an anti-bullying program by providing a group of student leaders who look for bullying behavior and help stop it. S.T.A.R.S Leaders are trained to be aware of and report any negative behavior they see, creating a safer school for everybody.
The goal of S.T.A.R.S is to provide 6th graders with a structure in which students make real connections with each other thus increasing school safety and reducing incidences of bullying. Through this program, students learn that people at school care about them and their success. S.T.A.R.S is the middle school transition program that will increase student achievement, enhance character development efforts and create an anti-bullying environment at Fort Lupton Middle School.

- Middle School Orientation (half-day, Tuesday, August 13, 2013): S.T.A.R.S Leaders and 6th graders start building the mentor relationship and receive information about how to be successful in middle school.
- Academic Follow-Ups (year-long): S.T.A.R.S Leaders support 6th grade academic success and character development through classroom visits. (S.T.A.R.S Mini help, tutoring during Power Hour, etc.)
- Social Follow-Ups (year-long): S.T.A.R.S Leaders help 6th graders connect outside the classroom at social events to increase student engagement and promote a positive student climate. (6th grade lunch, S.T.A.R.S movie nights, community events, etc.)
